About
Blarney in Co. Chorcaí has an Irish-medium primary school in Gaelscoil Mhuscraí, based at Sean Íochtarach. Teaching across the curriculum is through Irish, on an immersion basis, and the school is co-educational and Catholic, with around 195 pupils. It operates under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta. Classes run from Naíonáin Bheaga to Rang 6. Infants finish at 1.30pm and pupils from Rang 1 to Rang 6 at 2.30pm. Science, maths and engineering work runs through the school under the Discover Primary Science and Maths programme, with classroom experiments on materials, forces, air and living things, visits to science centres and entries to the Primary Science Fair. Environmental work is organised through Green Schools, covering litter and waste, European and global citizenship, energy, water conservation and travel. Local history projects have been undertaken for the Discover Cork Schools' Heritage Project, researching subjects such as the Muskerry tram and the Blarney woollen mills. Pupils prepare for First Communion, and there is a parents' association.
