About

St. Brigid’s National School is a mixed‑faith, Catholic‑ethos primary school situated in Sheena, Drumkeerin, County Leitrim. The school provides education for children from junior infants to sixth class, currently accommodating around 67 pupils. It follows the Irish early years curriculum (Aistear) and the national primary curriculum, aiming to meet the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of each child. The ethos promotes a happy, safe and inclusive environment, encouraging respect, responsibility and gender equality while recognising the religious diversity of the community. The campus comprises three permanent classrooms, a purpose‑built room and two dedicated learning‑support rooms. Outdoor facilities include a basketball court, a front play area, a rear football field and a school garden where pupils grow vegetables, trees and native plants. Environmental stewardship is a key feature, with the school holding Green Flag and Active Flag awards, running projects such as a hedgehog hotel, biodiversity habitats and tree‑planting initiatives. Parent involvement is fostered through a strong Parents Association and regular community events.

History

St. Brigid’s Central National School stands on the historic site where French forces camped during the 1798 rebellion. The school opened its doors in September 1976, replacing the former school on the old school road in the village. Its establishment resulted from the amalgamation of Kilmore National School and Moneenatieve National School, both of which closed the previous summer.
