About
This Church of Ireland primary school stands on Harbour Road in Dalkey, Co. Dublin, and is recognised by the Department of Education under the name Dalkey National School, No 2. It uses the name St. Patrick's National School. Management rests with the Church of Ireland and the Archbishop of Dublin is patron. The school sets out to reflect that church's ethos in an ecumenical setting, and states that children are treated equally whatever their faith, gender, disability or race. There are four teachers and 101 pupils, so classes are combined in pairs: first with second, third with fourth, and fifth with sixth. Pupils sit on a student council, which has a hand in school fundraising. After-school activities run on the premises, among them chess, a science club, sailing and kayaking, model construction and sport. A parent teacher association organises events and raises funds for the school.
History
The parish school opened in 1870 with a single teacher, occupying part of a sexton's lodge and parochial hall built in 1868 by Charles Leslie JP. Those buildings adjoined St Patrick's Church, consecrated in 1843 for the Church of Ireland community on the coast between Dun Laoghaire and Bray, some 13km south of Dublin city. From the 1920s to the 1950s teaching took place in one large room heated by a coal stove, in what is now the Northover Hall. Rising numbers brought further work in the early 1960s, adding an entrance hallway, kitchen and toilets, with a parish room and office above and folding partitions to divide the classrooms. The present four-teacher building, put up together with parish rooms and offices, opened on 22 April 1999.
