History

The school traces its origins to 1971, when it opened with eight prefabricated classrooms, following efforts by Offaly VEC and the Sisters of Mercy. It began with staff from the Secondary Top, a second-level school run by the Sisters of Mercy since 1950. The school opened officially on 7 September 1971 and moved to its present site on 4 October of that year. Senior Cycle was approved in September 1976, and the first Leaving Cert class graduated in 1978. By the 1980s the prefabs were showing their age, and a campaign led to approval for a new building in 1987, which opened on 1 October 1990. Further extensions were added in 2003-2004. In 2007 the school was renamed from Kilcormac Vocational School to Coláiste Naomh Cormac.
