About
Coachford village, in the Lee Valley of Co. Cork, has a co-educational primary school with 169 pupils. It is the largest of three national schools serving Aghabullogue parish. Seven teachers work there, along with two special needs assistants, and visiting teachers take gymnastics and speech and drama during the year. Teaching follows the Revised Primary School Curriculum: English, Irish and Maths, together with SESE, SPHE, Music, Visual Arts, Drama and Physical Education. Infant classes use the Aistear framework, with themes such as the vet, the restaurant, and travel and transport. Science is a steady part of the work, through the Discover Science initiative, the STEPS Young Engineer award, VEX IQ robotics and experiments run in every class during Science Week. The school holds the Active School Flag and a Green Flag, and takes part in Health Promoting Schools. Gaelic football, hurling and camogie, soccer and athletics are played, and pupils run in the West Muskerry cross country championships in autumn and at Cork City Sports in summer. A Christmas concert is staged each year. The day starts at 9.00 a.m., infants finish at 1.40 p.m. and older classes at 2.40 p.m., with after-school classes on three afternoons.
