About
On the outskirts of Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon, beside the N60 Dublin road, Carrick National School is a Catholic co-educational primary school taking pupils from junior infants through to 6th class. It has DEIS status and an enrolment of 80. Classes are grouped as infants, rang 1 and 2, rang 3 and 4, and rang 5 and 6, using 4 mainstream classrooms and an SEN room. An astroturf pitch is used at lunch breaks, for training and for sports day, and the grounds also hold a polytunnel, a bicycle shelter and a car park named in memory of a former pupil. The school holds Green Schools flags for litter and waste, energy, water and travel, and its Green Schools committee is made up of a pupil from each classroom. Through the Incredible Edibles programme pupils sow and tend potatoes, strawberries, lettuce, chives, spinach and turnips in raised beds and the polytunnel. Gaelic football is played through Cumann na mBunscol, and pupils also take part in rounders, five-a-side soccer, cycling and road safety instruction and chess.
