History

The first national school in Caherline opened in 1838 opposite the Church, with one small room and minimal furniture. It was staffed initially by one man, later by two teachers, and after twenty years, three teachers. That building closed in 1901 when a second school opened at a total cost of £776 including furniture. The present school building cost £120,000 and opened in 1986, with the then Minister for Industry and Commerce Michael J Noonan performing the opening and Bishop Dermot Clifford and Archdeacon Brian Snow blessing it. An additional classroom was built in 2008 and two SEN classrooms followed in 2009. The building was extended again in 2013 with two more classrooms. The old school building was reconstructed in 1993 and previously hosted school concerts.
