About
A small rural primary school in Co. Limerick, Banogue National School is co-educational and under Catholic patronage, with 97 pupils enrolled. Teaching is organised in mixed classes that combine two year groups in one room, and average class size is 21. Staffing runs to nine teachers, among them four mainstream posts, two special educational needs posts and two attached to the autism classes, along with six full-time special needs assistants. Two autism classes operate, both following the TEACCH programme, and pupils based in them integrate with mainstream classes once readiness is established. Their timetable takes in baking, yoga, life skills, swimming and horse riding alongside the primary curriculum. Facilities include an outdoor play area, a grass playing pitch, a Learning & Resource Room, interactive whiteboards and a community hall attached to the school. Infants finish at 1.40pm and 1st to 6th class at 2.40pm. A Bus Éireann route serves the school, and a healthy eating policy applies to lunches. The motto is given as "A School for Everyone". Awards received include Green Schools, Amber Flag, Gaelbhratach and ESB Science Blast.
History
The school building in use today opened in 1967. An extension completed in 2013 added to and modernised the accommodation. Provision for pupils with autism came later, with one class established in August 2021 and a second in August 2023. A further new build has since been sanctioned to house the two classes and the associated spaces.
