About
Under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Ferns, St. Brigid's National School serves the small rural village of Annacurra in south east Wicklow. The school is co-educational and has 122 pupils. Teaching is organised across 5 mainstream classes, with 2 special classes and 2 special education teachers, and 7 special needs assistants work in the school. Two classrooms for autistic pupils were built in an extension finished in 2017, along with sensory rooms and an open area with a kitchen. The building also has a PE hall, which was enlarged in the same works, and a glass porch at the entrance. Its stated aim is the development of the whole child with Christian and Catholic values as the focus, and the school follows curriculum guidelines issued by the Department of Education and Skills.
History
The original school at Annacurra was built in 1940 and had 2 rooms, standing where the PE hall is now. Pupil numbers rose through the 1960s and 1970s, and classes were held in a prefab and a converted shelter. Four more classrooms went up in the late 1980s and 1990, two on the road side and two facing the GAA ground. Building resumed in 2010 with a classroom, a resource room and a disabled toilet. Growing numbers brought another classroom and resource room in 2015, when internal corridors were run between the newer rooms. The largest phase started in October 2016 and finished in 2017, producing 2 autism classrooms, sensory rooms, an open space with a kitchen, an extended PE hall and a glass porch. A first classroom for autistic pupils had opened in 2015.
