About
An Mhodh Scoil is a vibrant Irish‑medium primary school situated on O'Connell Avenue in Limerick. It delivers an engaging, curriculum‑rich programme for pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, under the patronage of the Department of Education and Science. The school’s ethos centres on a safe, caring environment that nurtures academic progress alongside spiritual, emotional, sporting and creative development, fostering a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom. The school is equipped with modern electronic classrooms, including interactive whiteboards, Educlick software and a fleet of laptops and tablets to support digital literacy. Dedicated spaces for music, choir, arts and crafts, as well as an active health campus and well‑trained sports staff, enhance the holistic education on offer. Participation in the Green Schools programme (three Green Flag awards) and a strong science tradition, together with an accelerated reading programme, underline the school’s commitment to environmental awareness and literacy excellence.
History
The Model Primary School traces its origins to the first Model School founded in 1843, one of 25 established across Ireland. Designed by architect Frederick Darley, the limestone two‑storey ashlar building was constructed from 1853 and officially opened in 1855, originally housing an infant school, a girls’ school, a boys’ school and a short‑lived mariners’ school. The girls’ and infant schools merged in 1966. After a devastating fire on 3 September 1977, the school was rapidly re‑established in prefabricated classrooms and fully rebuilt and extended by 1986, when Minister Michael Noonan reopened the new facilities.
